Trichomoniasis Treatment in Thonotosassa, FL

Trichomoniasis Treatment Thonotosassa, FL

Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by infection with a protozoan parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. The trichomoniasis parasite is passed during sexual intercourse, and can be transmitted from penis to vagina or vice versa. It can also be transmitted from vagina to vagina, but the infection is not commonly seen in the mouth or anus.

Of the 3.7 million Americans estimated to have trichomoniasis, most are women, especially older women. While usually asymptomatic and not dangerous in and of itself, trichomoniasis can cause pregnancy complications and make you more vulnerable to other more serious STDs, like HIV. Luckily, trichomoniasis is the most common curable STD and treatment is readily available through a healthcare provider.

Trichomoniasis Symptoms

Only 30 percent of trichomoniasis sufferers experience any symptoms at all. It is unknown why some people experience symptoms of the STD trichomoniasis, while others do not. It may be due to immune system function, general health or other factors that are not fully understood. If symptoms occur, they generally appear within 5-30 days post-infection, but they can occur much later or not at all. Symptoms can also occur intermittently. When they occur, they will vary and will be different in men and women.

In men, trichomoniasis symptoms may include:

  • Burning during or after urination
  • Itching or irritation inside the penis
  • Discharge
  • Pain or burning sensation after ejaculation

Women with trichomoniasis may experience the following symptoms, known as trichomoniasis vaginitis:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Soreness
  • Discomfort, pain or burning with urination
  • Thin discharge that may be clear or be tinted white, green or yellow, and carries an unusual, noticeable odor

In both men and women, trichomoniasis can make sex less enjoyable, sometimes even unpleasant.

Trichomoniasis Diagnosis & Treatment

A laboratory test is the only sure method for diagnosing trichomoniasis. If left undiagnosed and untreated, trichomoniasis will not go away on its own. It can remain in your system for years. Trichomoniasis is often discovered and diagnosed accidentally when it causes complications in pregnancy or you become infected with another STD. Trichomoniasis testing is available at most public health centers, as well as through your healthcare provider.

If you in fact have trichomoniasis, it can be easily cured with a single dose of oral antibiotics (metronidazole or tinidazole). This medication is safe for pregnant women. Avoid alcohol immediately after taking this medication because of unpleasant side effects that may manifest.

It is important to refrain from sexual relations for at least five days after being treated. It is also important to ensure your sexual partners are treated as well. A condom will not always protect you from trichomoniasis, although it will reduce your risk. Abstinence is the only sure way to avoid recontamination. One in five people will be re-infected with trichomoniasis within three months of treatment, especially if his/her partner fails to receive treatment.
